Plumbing Solutions for Older and Newer Decatur Homes

From cozy homes near Downtown Decatur to character-rich properties around Oakhurst and Winnona Park, our licensed residential plumbers have seen and fixed it all.

We tailor plumbing solutions for older properties in historic neighborhoods, providing PEX and copper upgrades for degraded and outdated galvanized steel, polybutylene, or other plumbing materials original to homes. Our local experience also qualifies us to handle aging clay sewer lines that are vulnerable to tree root intrusion and stress from shifting red clay soil.

In newer homes, we help to optimize efficiency, maintain code compliance, and protect your plumbing with preventative measures. That includes accurate water heater sizing, water softener and filtration systems, regular plumbing inspections, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you handle older plumbing systems common in historic Decatur homes?

Yes, we handle older plumbing systems common in historic Decatur homes, such as throughout the Oakhurst and Winona Park neighborhoods. These homes often have original older pipes and fixtures. Our team specializes in updating aging plumbing systems, repairing galvanized lines, and installing modern fixtures while preserving your home’s character.

Why does my Decatur home have low water pressure?

Your Decatur home may have low water pressure due to scale buildup in your pipes and faucets. Original plumbing materials in older homes may also leak and cause low water pressure.

When should I replace old plumbing pipes?

Replace old plumbing pipes, if they're beyond their expected lifespan or in poor condition. Galvanized steel pipes in older Decatur homes last up to 50 years, so most are overdue for replacement. New copper or PEX lines can last 40 to 80 years with proper care.

How do I find a reliable plumber in Decatur?

To find a reliable plumber in Decatur, turn to Chen Plumbing. Our team is licensed, we have a proven reputation for quality workmanship, and we always provide clear, upfront pricing.

Customer wanting sewer line and rest of cast iron in crawlspace replaced upon arrival. Customer stated they already have had majority of the cast iron replaced in the crawlspace and there’s only around 10 ft left. Customer did not want to pay for the camera. Informed customer her water service ran on top of the current sewer line and based on the age of the home it would most likely be galvanized and it would be best for us to replace it with the sewer line. Gave customer estimate, customer is price shopping before making a decision

Repipe the drain line for the branch line to the main stack 2in cast iron to 2in pvc.

Service Description: Laundry Drain Backup and Cast-Iron Branch Line Replacement

Upon arrival, we were called out to investigate a laundry drain line that was backing up. We began by assessing the affected drain line and inspecting the accessible piping in the crawlspace to determine the cause of the backup and identify the necessary repairs.

During our inspection, we discovered that the existing cast-iron piping in the crawlspace was aged and deteriorating. Based on the condition of the piping, we determined that the backup could be related to buildup or restrictions within the existing drain line, as well as the overall condition of the old cast-iron pipe.

After evaluating the affected section of the drainage system, we discussed the available repair options with the homeowner. The first option was to snake the existing branch line in an attempt to clear t

Water leak upon arrival. Customer stated he attempted to add an automatic flush to his water filter and now it is leaking at all joints. After inspecting the water filter informed customer he had cross threaded the connections and that the best option would be to install a 3 canister filtration system or just remove the single canister for now. Customer did not have a PRV on the house as well. Informed customer I highly recommended adding a PRV. Gave customer options, customer chose to just remove the filter and connect the pex back together so they had water. Cut out filter and replaced section with new pex. Turned water back on to check for leaks and found no leaks. Customers water is back on and no longer leaking. No leaks at departure

After an initial misdiagnosis of the problem at my home and an unnecessary water heater installation, the owner came out to do the necessary repairs himself. I was reimbursed for part of my costs and apologies were given. They very much wanted to make things right.
